Tools: Ceramic scratcher and spinner
In this blog post I would like to show you, through some videos, how to use the first two tools we have created: the clay scratcher and the spinner for trimming.
They are two very practical tools that will make our work easier. We have designed them ourselves according to our experience in the workshop. We have tested them and made different prototypes until we found the most comfortable and best design for their use.
The scratching tool consists of 5 stainless steel needles in a 3D printed blue PLA body. PLA is an ecological plastic material, renewable and biodegradable under certain conditions of temperature and humidity. It is obtained from raw materials from nature such as corn starch.
With it we can scratch the joining surfaces between parts of the same piece in a leather state. Instead of using a single punch or blade, as it has several punching elements, it is faster and very convenient due to its small size. It can also be used to give texture.
You can buy it in the web shop.
We have called the turning tool the “spinner”. It makes it easier for you to hold the workpiece on the bat when you have to trim it, as you can exert a little more pressure without your hand moving or deforming the workpiece. It has a ball bearing so that, when you rest your hand on the top of it, the support surface stays still while the piece is turning.
Like the scratcher, it is made in 3D with PLA and has a watertight steel bearing that facilitates good rotation.
The grip area is oval shaped to allow for various finger positions to make it more versatile and comfortable for every potter.
It is available in two sizes which you can see in the shop.
